2012 Hattrick McLaren Vale Red Blend

The philosophy behind The HATTRICK has always been to make a very limited release, blended red whose total effect  is greater than the sum of it’s individual parts. For the second time since 1997 we have varied from the original Shiraz, Grenache and Cabernet combination . In 2009 (as in 2008) we decided that our newly acquired Tempranillo parcel was  the standout minor blend option and hence crafted our second Shiraz Grenache  and  Cabernet blend.

The individual fruit parcels were open-vat fermented,  then  basket-pressed wines and  put to barrel.  A mix of mainly new and some second year French and a small number of American Oak barriques. After 9-12 months in barrel the Hattrick selection process picks up momentum. Each parcel was bench trialled against all others and preliminary blends were made. After this long  and involved process the final 2009 blend was determined and  returned to barrel to complete  maturation.

The 2012 HATTRICK is a sophisticated, complex style that shows a smooth, vibrant, fine-grained palate of rich kirsch, cherry and plum cedar characters with a background of fine oak and black-pepper. The wine exhibits finesse and balance throughout the length of the palate. The 2012 vintage  has impressed immediately from  release as a classically elegant wine, reflecting the vintage. Certainly it will reward cellaring over at least the next 8-10 years.         Bottled unfiltered.
The McLaren Vale region is famous for its  excellent aspect and Mediterranean micro-climate which provides a consistency of quality that is renowned, particularly for red-wine making. This blend of  selected vineyard McLaren Vale Shiraz, Grenache, and Tempranillo, and highlights this quality and is an outstanding example of the wine-blending art.

2012 Deaf Galah McLaren Vale Red Blend

In making Deaf Galah we have made great effort to ensure textural and flavour characters are retained.  Careful  oak selection and handling has ensured that the rich fruit characters of the vineyards have been accentuated rather than covered. We use a second and third year French and American Oak as well as new Oak.  Each varietal is individually fermented and aged and then each parcel is further ‘rated’ for inclusion in the primary blend. Once this blend is completed and returned to barrel for a period we are able to complete the final touches by the inclusion of even small parcels of each varietal that have been kept to one side.

2012 is the fifth release Deaf Galah. It is a blend  of Shiraz, Grenache  and Tempranillo, and maintains the complex and flavousome style that has become the hallmark of this wine. 2012 was an excellent vintage for South Austrlia and McLaren Vale in particular with a smaller than average but high quality yield. Whilst this vintage will benefit from cellaring of upto 8 -10 years it shows excellent balance between fruit, tannins and natural acidity to provide a fresh and vibrant young palate that will mature beautifully.

2011 Alliamce McLaren Vale Shiraz

The 2011 Alliance Shiraz is the twelfth release of this label. It is a fine example of the fruit driven, flavour first style that is synonymous with the  Alliance label.

The 2011 Shiraz was made by ADW at Serafino Wines at McLaren Vale and has been sourced soley from the excellent  Maglieri Family owned vineyards. These vineyards are perfectly located on the beautifully elevated rises of McLaren Vale, south of Adelaide. Shiraz from this region is known for richness of flavour and softness of tannins which creates wines of smooth drinkability, even in their youth.  The Shiraz from these particular vineyards and is charactered by rich earth character  and dark fruit flavours.

As with each Alliance vintage, the fruit was picked  at full ripeness, then given a long cool ferment in open vat fermenters.  Post fermentation the must was pressed out and the wine was matured in mix of new and mainly second year French and  American Oak Barriques for approximately 20  months.

The 2011 Alliance Shiraz  shows layers of  sweet, summer-fruit characters with a touch of lively spice and a layer of fresh yet gentle oak character to support this. It shows a typically McLaren Vale fullness and richness of fruit.

It  is a fine  drink now in its relative youth but will show growth and gain weight and complexity over the next 3-5 years.

2009 ADW Alliance McLaren Vale Cabernet Merlot

The Alliance McLaren Vale Cabernet Merlot is made by ADW from prime fruit sourced from the the Maglieri Family Vineyards

This broad vineyard choice and judicious blending have resulted in super-value red that clearly shows the inherent fruit quality of the McLaren Vale. All vintages produced to date reflect the consistency that we are striving for. Smooth berry fruit showing cassis and plum with a savoury oak overlay are the hallmarks of this wine. The palate is medium to full weight with a supple, rich texture.

This is certainly a food friendly style that matches well with a broad cross-section of foods especially modern ‘Asian-fusion’ flavours. It is ready to drink on release and will develop some fine leather and chocolate characters with mid term cellaring.
